Well August is soon over and so is the summer and now all the Swedish people are in a hurry to go to their last “crayfish parties” fort this year. A crayfish party is a Swedish tradition that starts in the middle of August and goes on sometimes to the first weekend of September.
A crayfish party is like a get together for friends and family, a traditional crayfish party is usually in someone’s back yard and it almost always rain so we always have a big party tent over the tables, and we eat crayfish and all other kind of shellfish and wear stupid little party hats, haha!
After the food we usually start playing some games depending on the weather. If the weather is good we play kubb, or of the weather is bad we have a lot other games to play, for example that somebody gives out challenges to all the guest and then they have to do or say something the entire night, like they have to be negative, or that they have to start singing from time to time, or that they have to have a toast for someone in the party, it’s really fun and after a couple of hours it’s time to reveal their challenge and everybody just starts laughing when they finds out.
The most important part of the whole party is of course the alcohol! We have something called “snaps”, it’s like a shot, and in Sweden we have snaps on every holiday and party, we have it at Christmas, Easter, midsummer party and crayfish party, and before we drink the shot we always sing a little song that makes absolutely no sense at all but all the Swedish people know it, it’s kind of funny when you think about it.
The crayfish party is a wonderful Swedish tradition with a lot of happiness and fun with our friends and family.
