I have been offered an opportunity to take a part of the International Commerce Scholarship and the winner of this competition will win $500 and the winner will also sit at the table of the president of Berkeley and have dinner, which to me is more important than the money.
I have until the 27th to hand it in and it seems like a lot of work, but it is definitive worth a try.
I really encourage Berkeley students to take a part of this and give it a try, who knows you might win.
The rules are:
Applicant must attend Berkeley College in an undergraduate or graduate program, and submit a copy of a recent college/university transcript.
Applicant must have completed at least one year at college/university with at least a "B" average. (3.0 equivalent)
Special consideration will be given to a student in an International Business or a business related major, e.g. transportation or logistics.
Applicant must submit a completed ICC scholarship application (attached) with an essay of minimum 250 words and maximum of 1000 words, double-spaced. The essay should explain why the applicant has chosen his/her field of study and outline his/her career objectives. The essay topics to choose from this year are:
1. The Suez Canal is an artificial waterway that connects the Mediterranean and Red Seas while separating the African continent from Asia. The Suez Canal is one of the most important waterways in the world as it is the fastest crossing from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean and offers the shortest maritime route between Europe and the lands lying around the Indian and Western Pacific oceans.
a. What role does the Suez Canal play today in facilitating world trade?
b. How are the revolutions in Egypt and in the other Arab countries affecting the Suez Canal?
c. In what ways will the emergence of China and India as economic super powers affect the Suez Canal?
2. Please examine the role of Strait of Hormuz in the context of present flow patterns of international trade. Iran is now threatening to block this 35 mile wide strait, while the United States of America has issued a stern warning to Iran not to do so and has threatened sanctions. Describe the threat and effect of an Iranian closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
If Iran goes ahead with closing the Strait of Hormuz, what will be the impact on oil prices and Iran's inability to export any products to rest of the world. In such an eventuality, what action should the United States of America and the western world take to keep free movement of international trade?
