On Monday Gothenburg opens up their doors for over 1567 teams from 72 nations to compete in the annual soccer tournament - Gothia Cup.
For one week this city is going to be filled with soccer crazy boys and girls ages 11-19, who are all here for one thing, to play soccer.
During this one week Gothenburg is going to be revolving around this game, every soccer field available is going be filled from sunrise to sunset. Almost a hundred fields are being played on each day. And at night they have a disco for the kids, so they can have some fun besides the soccer. And that places gets crowded, at some point, you'll have to wait in line for hours to get in. When you are inside the music is loud and people are dancing, a lot of kids meet at the games and goes to the disco together and then the love is in the air.
It's amazing to see all these kids from our continents, countries and cities around the world come together for one week to do nothing else than to play soccer. Nothing else matters beside the love for the game, not the color of their skin, if they are rich or poor, or what religion they practice, the only thing that matter is the common love for that one sport.
Fun facts about Gothia Cup:
It started in 1975 with 275 teams participating in the tournament.
Today it's over a thousand teams participating.
If you take the amount of participates in consideration, it's the worlds largest soccer tournament.
300,000 visitors came to the major fields in Heden (the major games are held there) last year.
In 2006 the tournament generated 282 million swedish kronor in tourist income for Gothenburg City.
On Monday the opening ceremony will be held and for you who won't be able to go, the ceremony will be live on "Viasat Fotboll" at 19.00 swedish time. Unfortunately I think this channel is only available in Scandinavia.
Good luck to all the participates in this years Gothia Cup!
