Carter Oosterhouse I just had to start with Carter. What a beautiful hunk of a man. I swear I can watch his shows, and at the end, I don't even remember what he did. I just know I like watching him while his strong arms are lifting pieces of wood, and he's smiling while his jet black hair gets a little mussed from all his hard work. Gee, that sort of sounds like the beginning of one of those romantic novels, doesn't it? As far as his carpentry and designing skills go, from what I have paid attention to, Carter is very skilled at what he does. He has two shows on HGTV. One is "Carter Can" and oh yes he does, and "Red Hot & Green" where he gets involved with a lot of the new "green" designing and he often talks about "sustainable products". He has a good eye for what looks good too. His personality is one of a very laid back type of guy. I can't imagine him ever saying a curse word or having a temper tantrum, although I'm sure he does both those things at times. I just can't imagine it when I'm looking at him. He's just plain beautiful. David Bromstad David is another guy with big strong muscular arms. All David needs is just a little encouragement and he's happy to slide up his short sleeves so you can check out his "guns" with the big tattoo. Actually, more recently he's been wearing tank tops that gives us a great view for free. He must spend a lot of time in the gym, because I don't think the painting, designing and moving around a few pieces of furniture on his show "Color Splash" is enough to make those upper arms look like that. Another very cool thing about David is that he's a real artist. If he needs a piece of artwork for the wall in back of a couch, he'll paint one. And it's terrific. David seems so young and eager to please. When a client says they must have their big plasma screen TV in their living room, David understands and accommodates. Other designers may not be so flexible about that issue, but David is. That's why we love him. Sabrina Soto I just love her. Sabrina reminds me of my daughter. She's a very pretty girl, but isn't afraid to pick up a power tool or two and get her hands dirty. What a great combination. One of her shows called "Get It Sold" is fascinating to watch. These are houses that have been on the market for a while and don't seem to be selling. So they bring in Sabrina to do some staging to bring the place up to date. She walks into people's homes and seems to instantly know what to do. She smiles sweetly as she's telling the homeowners to get rid of their children's toys, any signs that they own a pet, and their family photos. And they do it. Sabrina paints, rips up carpet, plants shrubbery in the front lawn, uses a cordless drill, and does it all apparently in one afternoon. She multi-tasks well. Once she's done with all her repairing and de-cluttering and painting and furniture placement, the house looks incredible. It goes from looking old and tired to fresh and modern and inviting. Sabrina is the best at what she does. Samantha Pynn Our Sammie is the hostess of a show called "Pure Design". She has such a shockingly pretty face and her voice is so soft that it's like being hypnotized by an angel. Hence, it's a very relaxing experience to watch her show. She goes on and on about being "eco-friendly" and makes it all sound so wonderful. Her clients hire her to transform a room into something both functional and beautiful, and Samantha steps into action. Unlike Sabrina Soto above, Samantha would never get her hands dirty. She has people for that. Samantha is the designer with the vision and I have to admit that I really love what she does. She's not afraid to add some femininity to her decorating which is hard to find these days. One other element of her show that makes it interesting is that she usually finds a local artist who makes something unusual, such as artwork or pottery. And the artist will make something to order for Samantha to use in one of the rooms she's transforming. I like to see what creative person she features next. The whole show "Pure Design" is like taking a breather. You somehow instantly feel calmer and hate to see the show end. Sofie Allsopp If Samantha Pyne above is an angel, then Sofie Allsopp from the show "Unsellables" is her cute but naughty sister, since they look a bit alike. Sofie Allsopp does what Sabrina Soto does, which is getting people's home ready to sell. But again, unlike Sabrina Soto, Sofie would never be caught dead picking up a hammer or screw driver. Sofie's outfits would definitely get ruined, and we can't have that. Sofie has an English accent which gives her that slight uppity attitude which I find amusing as she's critiquing people's homes. She'll walk into a house and her cute little nose moves up in the air just a notch while she's taking it all in. She'll point to a pile of clutter and ask the homeowners "What is that?" and they inevitably get a little embarrassed. I swear Sofie does a discreet little eye roll no matter what their explanation is. To her credit though, Sofie does wonders with how she changes the look of different rooms. By the time she's done staging, the houses all do look much better and ready for a successful open house. Vern Yip What an adorable little man Vern Yip is with his huge smile and dimples showing. He's someone you'd love to have as a best friend. I enjoy watching his show "Deserving Designs". It incorporates just a little bit of "Extreme Makeover Home Edition" with a design show. It's uplifting to watch. The premise of the show is that Vern finds someone who "deserves" to have a room all done over. The homeowner knows about it, but Vern has a little secret up his sleeve. He does a second room as well as a little surprise. There's always a few tears of joy and gratitude shed as the homeowner sees the end result on reveal day, as well as the surprise second room makeover. And Vern is right there to give out hugs. The only slightly negative thing I can say about Vern is that he uses just a little bit too much dark brown paint on walls for my liking, and maybe just a few more candles hanging on those walls than I would feel comfortable with. But besides that, Vern is a phenomenal designer. He makes it all good with his happy and bubbly personality. Candice Olsen You can go on any of the message boards regarding the HGTV design shows, and you'll see that Candice Olsen still reigns supreme as the leading designer ever, hands down. Everybody seems to love Candice Olsen, myself included. Now granted, I heard she has pretty large budgets to work with on her show "Divine Design", but her designs are all unbelievably beautiful and creative. I like watching her in her studio flipping through books of fabric swatches and tile samples to see what she wants to use. Sometimes you see the wide array of colors and textures she's choosing and you're not quite sure if this is the one time that Candice will falter. But she doesn't. Never. When she's finished, the room is somewhere you want to be and spend time in. Candice is a very funny lady as well. If she ever loses her designing touch, she could probably have a career as a comedienne. I would love to have the budget to hire Candice to come to my house, but that will only happen in my dreams. Maybe next lifetime, eh? |
