For years I have been lifting weights in the gym. It has been benefiting me, and at the same time not. It has made my body bigger and stronger, but it has also made me stiff. As a basketball player, becoming stiff is the last thing you want because you want to be able to go through long motions, and if you are stiff then these motions will be short and useless on the court.
After the season ended for us, I decided to go hard in the gym for 3 months to build a good base of muscles before entering my summer workout.
After the season ended for us, I decided to go hard in the gym for 3 months to build a good base of muscles before entering my summer workout.
Now the summer is here, I have been working out without weights, this method is called calisthenics. I can say that calisthenics much more difficult than lifting, but much better for an athlete.
My workout contains of pull-ups, pushups, dips, shoulder pushups and much more body weight workout. When working out like this, you will become much stronger, more explosive, and faster. Your risk of injuries are less than lifting weights. I believe that you are truly strong if you can lift you own body for 20-30 reps. I have seen guys in the gym that bench presses 300 lb but can’t do a single pull-up. My advice to anyone working out is that you should mix weights with body weight just so you can become as strong as possible.
